Myself and Mohammad Seraji are directing the drama "Closer" by Patrick Marber. Thus, you may see these faces plastered around Syracuse, or tucked beneath your windshield wipers. Lindsey VanOrman is playing waifish Alice, Liam Fitzpatrick plays manipulative Larry, Alex Taussig is playing brooding Dan and Liz Sutphen is Anna, the coveted photographer. The play is scheduled for August 7, 8th and 9th at Recess Coffee House on Harvard in Syracuse. Times have yet to be established.

We began our photoshoot on Saturday in Westcott Nation, but then moved the project to several derelict buildings in Syracuse to better capture the mood of "Closer." Lindsey VanOrman was not present at the photoshoot and her pictures were taken later around the Cicero area.

For publicity, our method is waves of flyers and posters with gradually more information on each edition. I also plan on selling prints at the performances, as well as chapbooks of my and Mohammad's poetry and further, baked goods.

Monologues."

Our productions of "The Vagina Monologues" are coming up here in two weeks. To enhance the experience, we're going to have projections of images behind our actors during some of the monologues. One of the monologues calls for a painting of a black woman with a giant afro. This monologue takes place in the 1970's. Here are some sketches, I'm still trying to figure out which one I like better. One is supposed to be slightly more realistic and the other is supposed to look more like a cartoon. Haven't decided yet. One will be 2x the size and sold at our performances. The money's going to Vera House and Women's Info.

It's Been Forever

I've been busy with school and V-Day. I made this collage. I don't know why; I usually don't make collages. I really loved doing this and probably will make more in the future.

Here are a few portions of it, it's rather large.

This project has made it clear that I need a larger scanner. This is my favorite corner.

In this portion you can see the face of my friend Moses. I stole it from his Facebook. In it he looks kind of bewildered and also disgruntled. I think it's a nice touch.

I've been working out the details to an epic graphic novel. This is a portion I made about this character, Eloise, who is completely indifferent towards everything, mostly.

I sketched this of Hogan a while ago. Hogan is that typical nerdy guy who feels as though he is an expert on everything. He works in an adult bookstore. He's eloquent, yes, but applies such to rather asinine subjects. Anyway, I thought this was funny. A whole comic strip could be built around this fellow, I like his tiny hands.

My friend recently gave me a lot of Modest Mouse CDs. Upon receiving them, they have been all I've listened to. It's slipped into my sketchbook. I drew this for "3rd Planet." The lines in the drawing are lyrics from the song. Apparently when I am not drawing from a female model, I like to give my sketches large heads and oddly shaped bodies. So ignore that for now. Otherwise I think it's a nice one of a little girl. It was insanely difficult not giving her breasts and hips, mind you. I had to restrain myself. Two pencil erasers took a good beating, one they didn't deserve.

Seems like the theme for while I was at Alfred was women's behinds.

Also, this girl's underwear is falling off. The original was better but I drew over it accidently. So I traced it, this is the result. The underpants aren't sagging enough, in my opinion, to be falling off her skinny legs.

Finally, a front view. Unfortunately, I can change up how my guys look, but not my females. I read that some think a variety of styles shows lack of focus. I disagree, doesn't it, rather, show a mastery of art? Whatever.

No anime festival at the palace. No jazz festival.

I decided to take the bus tomorrow. I'm going to lie to folks about who I am. I don't yet, I'm going to make it up. That was the advice of the teacher at the creative writing class. Another thing I learned at Alfred was to seize the day.

Joe Driscoll, beat boxing prodigy, is returning home in July. I am pleased.

Wild-haired woman!

The poem is "Dulce Et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen. Basically, it's about how war is glorified and there is nothing beautiful or romantic about the death of soldiers. The poem is pretty pointedly saying young boys shouldn't be lied to when they are recruited for war because war is sick, hard and difficult and there isn't much else to it. The title comes from a line in Horace (Odes): "Dulce et decorum est / Pro patria mori," which I guess roughly translates to "it is sweet and right to die for one's country."

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.

When I was younger, I used to have a print hanging in my room. I loved it because it was really magical and I'd get lost in it. The drawing was of a parade consisting of a miniature princess, a frog, a rat and a goblin prancing about the floor of a mysterious and mythical forest. I've since lost the print and have begun an extensive internet-based search for it using keywords like "goblin drawing." Unfortunately, instead of my painting, I found pictures of a wacky, scary girl doing a "goblin dance." I have drawn it:

This is one of the original photographs. I know not her name or why she does the goblin dance, perhaps the mystery is the source of its charm.

Those drawings were done together, India ink on paper. The first (a girl with her legs resting on a tree trunk) is better than the second (a girl sitting in a field). Obviously, the girl in the field is experiencing an ink malfunction.

That's my self portrait. I did an awkward pose because it would be harder to draw-- looks neater than a dead-eyed girl staring at you, doesn't it?   Here's another:

I love to draw. I took a drawing class 2 years ago, but only because I like the teacher. When I want, I can draw pretty realistically, but where's the fun in that? Cartoons are representations of the truth, therefor things that are not physically possible should be attempted, it's that kind of outlet. They should be disgusting, wild, bizarre, collaborations of annomolies questioning our pathetic, banal lives.

Those are my watercolors. I think I'll start using them more often.   I love drawing women. You will often see an abdomen, breasts, a pugnacious butt, or something along those lines hanging out around my drawings.

With the discovery of Drawn.ca, I found that other cartoonists, animators, future-graphic novelist, future-graphic journalists and enthusiast alike have collaborated, linking onto one another's pages to create a splendid, colorful and diverse network of talent.   As part of Summer Vacation, I plan on taking my sketchbooks and loading them (little by little) onto this sketchblog. As well as different little comics. And, then, future bigger projects such as graphic novels, etc.
